* * *

Kyle’s only thirteen and likes to wear black clothes. He arrived at Secret Harbor yesterday. Sergio moved out a few days ago, and they put Kyle in my room. I think I’ll like him, because he was probably one of the poor white kids at his school. He’s short, has brown hair, and plays rock music on an electric guitar with no amplifier. Kyle’s cool so far, only he used to run away to Capitol Hill, so he talks a lot about his boy Turtle, who’s locked up for a murder that happened in an alley last year. I told him I haven’t been to Seattle since I was real young.

My digital alarm clock picks up a few radio stations out here, and at night we listen to music quietly and lay in our beds talking with the light out. I don’t think he’s an S.O., but I’ve found myself hoping he doesn’t make a move on me like Sergio did. He hasn’t though. Instead, he asks questions like, “Have you ever killed someone?” and of course, I lie, tell him I haven’t.

He says, “Don’t ever do it, bro. It’ll haunt you the rest of your life. I know cause I did it once, and there isn’t a night I go to sleep where I don’t see the guy’s face. Wanna know how?”

“How what?” I ask.

“How I did it.”

“How you killed him?”

“Yeah.”

“Uh, okay. Sure. How’d you do it?”

“Mercury. You know what that is?”

“The planet?”

“No, not the planet. Mercury. It’s liquid metal, and it’s highly poisonous. They used to put it in those glass thermometers that they stick up babies’ asses. I don’t know if they still use them in babies’ asses actually, but they definitely used to. My mom had a few in the house, so I broke them open and poured the mercury into a gel capsule. I told this guy it was E.”

“E?” I ask.

“Yeah, ecstasy. It was this guy named Trip, who turned out to be a rat. He took E all the time, so it was easy to get him to take the mercury pill. That’s what addiction does to people, know what I mean?”

Kyle says he understands addiction because before coming to Secret Harbor, he lived on the streets and stuck needles into his arms every day. Of all his stories, this one I believe because he has the markings to prove it. Not just that, but he might be a little brain damaged from the drugs. When he speaks, he usually makes this weird duck-face, that looks like he’s chewing on the inside of his cheek.

Kyle’s smart though, at least that’s what he says.

“I’m borderline genius. That means my IQ’s just under genius level. They tested me in juvie.”

So we get to talking and I tell him about Karina and for some reason I end up telling him how much I love her, and
